This blog is set up to allow quilters around the world to come together and donate quilts to our unseen heroes, the 911 Operator!Quiltingrannyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08885973879588867172noreply@blogger.comBlogger475125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-796815095369839192.post-52841372540820990292019-01-18T08:53:00.003-08:002019-01-18T08:53:55.576-08:00

This is just one of the 39 quilts that have been sent out by amazing quilters from all over the United States and as far away as this one was from Alaska.

I have been so blessed to have so many quilters step up and get quilts out ASAP and I still have 14 quilts that are currently in a variety of stages of completeness.

I cannot tell you how thankful I am to each one of you have answered the call, sent the quilts out and have received or are patiently awaiting pictures from the recipients.

While the need seems to be waning in the area of the local police departments, we have received no requests oddly from any of the local fire fighters.

We have completed many quilts for the CHP, Paradise PD, Cal Trans and are now working on families from the University of Chico police department.

I was hoping to make the trip to the area in January or February, but as life gets in the way, my back has put me down and unable to drive since New Years Eve.. I will get down that way as soon as I can travel and drive myself once again.

It is the goal of Layers of Hope Quilting 911 that quilts go directly from the quilter to the family in need, but if you feel you want to send them to me directly, just send me an email and I will send you my address.

Also, please know we still need quilts for those in need that have not been affected by the fires, so if you want to send a quilt that I can keep on hand to mail out to a first responder going through chemo or another life altering event, please let me know~

Blessings to you all!

Also, if you live along the I-5 corridor or know of a quilt shop along the I-5 corridor between Olympia, WA and Redding, CA. please have them post it and collect quilts for our first responders as I am planning a trip near the end of January or February.
While the Layers of Hope Quilting 911 logo is copyrighted in the state of Washington, I am granting people person to copy this to post where it will do the most good. Your quilt shops, your churches, etc..

At this time, we have completely covered 6 families with 26 quilts and still have many more to get quilts to. If you have freshly made quilts or quilts that have never been used sitting on a shelf and you keep saying you don't know what to do with them, open your heart and send it to a first responder who lost everything in the fires.

Just because the news and media are not covering these fires, the celebrities are not reaching out to these victims, does NOT mean we can't reach out and help them!

These people did NOT just lose their homes, they lost homes, vehicles, jobs, their towns, schools, hospital, try wrapping your mind around the total devastation and how many people are without.

Quilters have hearts and souls and we reach out. Please, help us get quilts to those in need.

Please understand these quilts go to first responders only..fire fighters, police officers, ambulance drivers, CHP, Cal Fire personnel and THEIR family members. I do NOT accept quilts for anyone else.

If you know of quilt shops along I-5, they will need to contact me so I can stop by on my way to Paradise. They can email me or go to Layers of Hope Quilting 911 and leave a message!
God Bless!
The generosity has warmed my hearts and their lives!

So far, we have covered 4 complete families, have more quilts enroute to cover another 6 families and that totals up to about 25 quilts sent thus far.

Here are just 2 of the several I have received pictures of. This family lost everything they owned, there is nothing left. They were blessed with a 5th wheel to call home at this time, but look at those 2 little babies so happy to have their own quilts, how can you not smile when you see such peace on a child's face?

This young lady loves Hawaii and wanted a quilt that reminded her of the ocean. The quilter that sent her this one happens to live in Honolulu and you cannot get any closer to Hawaii than receiving a quilt from a Hawaiian quilter, what a blessing!

I have a need for more quilts, because slowly but surely the word is getting around that first responders matter. There was a quilt giveaway in Chico and sadly, those quilts went very quickly and that is why I do what I do.

I reach out to the departments in the area and I ask for names and contacts of people we can send quilts to...fire fighters, CHP, police officers, EMT's, 911 operators, we give and we give with our hearts.

Right now I am looking for a quilter who has made an animal print large quilt for a bed that may have it just on a shelf waiting for that someone special. Why? Because I have an animal control officer that has been working daily since the fires to feed, water and rescue animals left behind by families. I am told she LOVES animals, so it doesn't matter if the quilt has tigers or cows on it, show me what you have and lets bless her socks off!

My moms garage

I have not been to this area as of yet, they are still keeping the residents out and I am NOT a resident. I am just the step daughter of an 84 year old wonderful man who lost his wife in 2010 and now everything else he has ever owned in his life is gone.

The truck near the middle of the bottom photo WAS a 1954 Ford that was going to my son, the mini van looking vehicle was actually a Class C RV he and my mom traveled around the USA in when she was still with us. We lost mom in 2010 and I do not believe 'Buttercup,' as my mom named her ever moved again.

This is why I quilt, this is why I ask you for quilts, it isn't just my step dad, it is thousands of elderly, families have nothing left and many watched their homes burn while they drove away that day.
Still, others I have spoken to stated they locked their doors and expected to come back to home. Now, home is gone!

I quilt for first responders and their families, our fire fighters who fought hard to safe homes and businesses while they watched their own homes burn to ashes. Police officers directing families out of the area that didn't know if their own families got out alive. Stories of fire fighter that went to rescue his dad and they both were trapped in the fire until 8 hours later when they could get out.
A mom who sobbed to me because for 2 days she did not know if her son a fire fighter had burned or was still alive.

These are the people we look up to that help us during a crisis, that stay the lines, that risk their lives saving others while unknown if their own families made it.

These are the heroes that would walk away from that word that need us, that need you, that need quilters, crochet and knitters, we need to cover these families with the love of a quilt.

Yesterday, I had a woman beg me to get 90 quilts to the linemen that were in the area and when I told her I could not do that, she broke down. We spoke for a bit, she understands, but daily people come to me with their stories and daily I tell them I cannot help them.

Right now, I have a list of 30 families in need a handful of quilters that have stepped up. I NEED YOU!!! THEY NEED YOU!!!

Please don't think these quilts sit in a warehouse, because they go directly to the recipient in need. Please do not think I have a hoard of quilts because I live in a 5th wheel and have no place to hoard anything. During times like these, I wish for a quilt hoard, I wish for that warehouse I can walk into and start loading quilts up and taking them to those in need, but sadly, I do not and that is why each one of you is important!

Step up, contact me and say you have a quilt or 2 or 10 or an afghan that is brand new and want to donate and I will assign you a family and an address to get them to.

If you can't quilt or knit or crochet...get on social media and shout it out, we have a need!!

There is a quilt shop in Chico accepting quilts for the elderly and other displaced families, but we are Layers of Hope Quilting 911 and our focus is on the first responders that put their lives on hold while saving thousands.

Please consider reaching out to a first responder family with a quilt, it is such an act of love.

Right now I have an immediate need for quilts for 3 young people in a family of 9 all the others have been covered and I know I have quilters out there that can help.

NEEDS:

1 Lime Green Minecraft Theme (if possible) if NOT, the Lime Green is important for a 6 year old young man.

1 Yellow and Orange quilt for a 12 year old young man

1 Red, Gray and White quilt for a 16 year old young lady.

Come on quilters, I know you are out there as well as crocheters and I know you have enough stash to reach into your heart and put something together for one of these 3.

The quilts do NOT come to me, they would go directly to the family in need, it saves doubling up on the postage.

If you can do this, please send me an email with Paradise Quilts in the top line to:
We are blessed he is safe and staying at my brothers home until he decides where he wants to go.

In the meantime, many fire fighters and their families, law enforcement families, dispatchers, ambulance drivers and other first reponders and working daily while having no more home for their families to return to.

I am so overwhelmed by all of this, reading their stories and wanting to help.

Please, I know the holidays are upon us, but think about what you can do with quilts to help those that help us!

The photo below is of my step dad's garage, I do not have any of his home at this writing!

Thank you

Right now, we have the family of Sturgis Fire volunteer and Assistant Chief David Fischer who lost this life a little over a week ago in a propane explosion that need quilts!

David has 7 children and his wife that were left behind with huge unfillable holes in their hearts and at this time, we have quilts being sent to his wife, his daughter, his 9 year old son, his 23 year old son. The need is for 4 more twin to double quilts for the other 4 sons.

Please, so many of you as quilters have a spare quilt or one that is almost complete and you do not know who you will gift it to. Please, won't you consider Chief Fischer's sons who lost their dad?

What a blessing our quilts are by showing these families people care and not just in their home towns, but from all over!

Blessings to you all!

At this time, there is a huge need for quilts for a Sturgis, SD fire fighters family. Assistant Fire Chief David Fischer died in an explosion just over a week ago leaving behind his wife and 7 children, 1 girl 23 and 6 boys 9 to 23.

At this time, there is a quilt on the way to the 9 year old son, but we need to get the other 7 quilts out to the boys and their mom and I know we can do this.

Sadly, when we are finished taking that on, I would like to get the fire fighters that worked closely with Assistant Chief Fischer quilts of their own and this is where I need so many of you to please step up as we need 47 quilts for the volunteers.

Please, contact me if you are willing to step up and help!

Knowing the huge need for quilts, we rent a heated storage unit and I am having my husband build some shelving inside the unit and I would love to begin collecting quilts of all sizes from crib and toddler to queen/king and colors for both male and female.

This will be done and when there is a need, I am hoping I can go to storage grab the number of quilts needed and pack them off and ship them out.

By doing it this way, I am no longer struggling to find quilts but will have them ready to go.
The dispatchers are absolutely thrilled with their quilts. I put each
one in a paper bag and stapled it shut so they didn’t know what they
were getting- complete anonymity - no one can complain that way. 😂
However, with that being said, I know many quilters would be willing to send quilts but they can't afford the postage.

I have a few people willing to help out in this area. So my wonderful quilters if you would like to send a quilt to either Westerville, OH or Las Vegas, NV all you need to do is send the quilt off, then send me a copy of the postal receipt showing it is going to either place and I will send you a check to reimburse you once I know the quilt arrived!

I hope this helps you all! Quiltingrannyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08885973879588867172noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-796815095369839192.post-23494245693261538062018-03-01T13:00:00.000-08:002018-03-01T13:00:48.235-08:00Three Delivered to Westerville Communications Today...I just have to give a huge thank you and shout out and long distance hug to Barbara D. out of Ohio who not only hand quilted the quilts you see below and used some machine work as well, but when they were finished, she personally delivered them to the communications department.

Wow! Let me tell you from what everyone tells me, there is nothing like receiving one of these quilts to make them feel better and to personally be able to meet the quilter...AWESOME!!!

We still need more so please contact me. Honestly, this is one of the smaller departments I have had requests for!

Bless you all!

It is important that I know what you are sending and when so I can notify the agency as well as keep records of how many have arrived.

Please remember the following:
Quilt Size 40 x 40 to larger (Your Choice)
Label Information Must Contain:
Quilters Name, Date Quilted
Layers of Hope-Quilting 911 Cares
**You can add anything you would like after that!**
Also if you would like when sending the quilt you may send a note or card to the department as well, that is entirely up to you.

Notify Me you are sending the quilt and please send me your name and address. I am NOT a huge business, I do NOT share your information with anyone.

However, I do keep it on file, send you a thank you note, a holiday card and once in awhile I may send you a request to ask if you would be able to send another when we have a dire need.

Thank you all! Quiltingrannyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08885973879588867172noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-796815095369839192.post-20044905893793035872018-02-19T15:44:00.000-08:002018-02-19T15:44:58.141-08:00Westerville Ohio Communications Center Quilts NeededWe are in desperate need right now to send out quilts to the 911 Communications Department of Westerville, Ohio where they lost two police officers on February 10th in an ambush style shooting.

Not only did they lose two of their friends and co-workers, they have been receiving hate calls from outsiders telling them how the officers deserved to die and more should die and this is NOT okay!

I usually do not bump up an agency when we still have needs unmet, but this agency needs some quilty love from you my faithful quilters.

The current need is 16 female and 6 male quilts and quilts can be large lap sized or twin sized or larger. All quilts must have a label that has the following information on it:

Name of Quilter
Date of Quilt
Layers of Hope-Quilting 911/911 Cares
Anything else you want to add

Also, please enclose a short note or card, while it is not necessary it helps those working behind the scenes to know you care.

Please contact me:
This picture was taken of my grandsons bedroom after I sent out a request for quilts for those many volunteers, first responders, families, chaplains, etc.. after the tragic mudslide that occured on March 22, 2014.

I had requested quilts and then our family went on vacation and when we returned, our living room, grandsons bedroom and our local post office were filled with quilts.

Quilts from the very simple to the very extravagant showed up and I also made several trips to Burien, Washington Town Square Fabric and Yarn Shop where my van was filled with quilts, hats, afghans from a wonderful quilt and yarn shop there, I was in awe!

My family and I were so blessed to have these quilts arrive, open the boxes, take photos and put them on here, our Facebook page and of course, Pinterest.

Then, we got to deliver these first hand to those affected by this tragedy and what we came back with was how amazing everyone was, when they say 'OSO Strong,' they mean it!

We were in the process of planning our next step in this organization, building a quilting shed in our yard that would be open to other quilters who wanted to come sit and chat, quilt, donate fabric, just be a part of us!

As life sometimes does, it got in the way and in 2015, we moved out of our home I loved so much, sold everything we could and purchased a 5th wheel.

This is where we are today, but instead of feeling sad about it, I have come to accept that this is where God has me at this time and I am truly blessed to have a place to call home. Sadly, I have no place to quilt, but that does not mean that I cannot still be the catalyst to get quilts from your hands to those in need as I have done in the past.

When the tragedy struck Las Vegas, I asked for quilts. At that time it was during the holidays and I could not contact a person within the center to keep me posted, so I prayed the need was met. Today, I have reached out once again to the center to see if I can get an update to pass onto all of you.

This morning I was sitting crocheting hats for our local homeless shelter when a call came into my cell phone from a number I didn't recognize and being spam called so much lately, I was going to ignore it, but I am so HAPPY I took the call.

On the other end was a dispatcher from Douglas County 911 in Colorado and she was asking for quilts to cover not only their dispatch center 36 at this time, but the families of the surviving deputies who were in an ambush in December, one deputy died, one was recently released from the hospital.

What made this call all the more special was the caller was working the dispatch center during the Century 16 shooting in Aurora and told me how the quilts they received after the shootings made all the difference to the dispatchers in the world. It could not take away their pain, but it let them know that someone cared enough about them to take the time to make them a quilt and send it to them.

To this day, her son uses the quilt she received all those years ago and I hope she sends me a picture so I can share it with you, how cool if someone recognized it after all these years as the one they sent and knew how much it meant to the receiver and now her son!

You make a difference in every stitch, every cut, every binding, every card you reach out to these unseen heroes with, they know we care! These quilts mean the world to them and while I know they take lots of work, I also know most of us have a stash of quilts that we have made that we can part with a few to shower someone in warmth.

NO! I can't quilt any longer, but I pray daily for the place to open up where I can set up my shop again, where I can continue not only asking for quilts, but making quilts!

Please, contact me at compassionatequilteratrocketmail.com or Facebook messenger via the Layers of Hope Quilting 911 Facebook page and let me know you are sending Las Vegas or Douglas County a quilt!

I know we are still trying to get quilts to Las Vegas dispatch and we have fell sadly short of meeting the goal and I believe it was due to the holidays.

Please, if you can send to Las Vegas or Douglas County, contact me via email and let me know.

I am a newer dispatcher at Douglas County Regional
dispatch. On December 31st we lots a deputy to gun fire at a call. This
incident has devastated the dispatchers I work with.
I
came from Aurora, Co dispatch center and worked the Century 16
shooting. We received 82 quilts from your organization and I can not
tell you what that meant to our center.

I am hoping to organize the same for my current center during this time of devastating loss.

**Your quilts make a difference to those hurting. Please, do NOT send the quilts to me, send me an Email and I will get an address to mail these to.'**

I am still living in a 5th wheel, but right now attempting to find a small place I can do my quilting from, keep Layers of Hope in your prayers for the right home to open up to my husband and I or someone to step up with a space large enough for me to set up in!

I just received news that Las Vegas Metro PD has only received three quilts and that truly breaks my heart because I know by the pictures I am posting below and the over 600 quilts I delivered alone to first responders when the mountain slid in Oso, WA that we as a quilting community can do better!

I can't deliver personally to Las Vegas, but trust me, if I could, I would be out collecting and delivering, it is just my life circumstances have changed so drastically, that all I can do is reach out to you who quilt and ask that you ask others that quilt to send quilts.

Las Vegas Metro Communications 911
400 S. Martin Luther King Blvd
Las Vegas, NV 89106-4372 **Please Note, the original zip code I was given, was incorrect!**

Las Vegas Fire Communications Division
500 North Casino Center Blvd
Las Vegas, NV 89101-2944

Please send large lap sized that will cover an adult or any other size you wish to send to these communications operators. There were 16 on duty for LVFCD the night of the shooting and 40 on duty for LVMC911 so right now, we are 53 short just to cover those that were there that night, that dealt with the panic and chaos.

In totality, we need 204 to cover both departments and I know we can do this. Please look at all you did for Oso and the huge fires in Okanogan County Washington and the quilts came from all over. I even had one personally hand carried to me from the Carolina's.

During the landslide that occurred in Oso, WA we delivered many quilts to the 911 Center and as fate would have it, I had left a box at home the first trip and would need to stop back by. Let me tell you, when you have someone tell you that they used to be a center divided and then, the quilts were delivered and something changed over night.

No longer were they divided by shifts, but they had become a team, they would see a quilt and instinctively know someone who would love it and they would put it back for them because they were on a day off. They smiled more, they spent more time being a team and not just shifts and I cried.

I am only one person. I could not do this on my own, it took hundreds of people coming together to get these quilts out, people not only from Washington and Oregon state, but all over this beautiful country of ours and one that I will never forget...a knock on my door one day and a woman handed me a quilt she had made and brought out on her flight from the east coast and personally delivered it to me.

Please, read the following information, send a quilt and then send me a quick note via email to let me know it was sent out.
LAS VEGAS ADDRESS UPDATE! Please share this on your page or with
friends. Also , there is one agency that has decided to buy each Center
a Keurig machine so if you are looking for something to send them send
them a box of the most current version of Keurig cups for coffee, tea
or hot chocolate. Other than that gift cards for Starbucks or fast food
places are other ideas along with anything from your region of the
country that might be fun. Okay here is a comprehensive list of the two
primary agencies within Las Vegas that handled the shooting Sunday
Night. Las Vegas Metro Communications 911 Center had 40 dispatchers on
duty. Their total amount of dispatchers is 150. The address to send
cards, letters and Gifts of support is 400 South Martin Luther King
Boulevard. Las Vegas, Nevada 89002. Make sure that you attention it to
the Bureau of communications or 911 Center.
Las Vegas fire handles
fire and emergency medical dispatching. They had 11 dispatchers on when
the event happened but called in additional help so they worked with a
total of 16 people that night. They're total complement of dispatchers
is 54. You may send support Cards & Gifts too Las Vegas fire
Communications division 500 North Casino Center Boulevard Las Vegas,
Nevada 89101. We know there are additional communication centers like
private ambulance companies, North Las Vegas, Henderson Police and the
highway patrol. We have asked Metro and the fire department to share
with them rather than Post 6 or 7 different addresses. Thank you for
your support both Las Vegas Metro and Fire have asked us to share their

On June 30, 2013, nineteen of the twenty Prescott, Arizona Granite Mountain Hotshots lost their lives fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire.

Those of you who are still following this blog and our Facebook page know as quickly as we could gather information, an all call went out to quilters all over the world to help make quilts for the families.

Without hesitation, quilters from all over began 'adopting,' family members, (parents, spouses, siblings and children) were sent quilts to comfort and let the families know in our own quiet way, that we were thinking of them.

After everyone was covered that we were aware of, I began to think about the survivor Brendan and what I could do for him, how much pain and sadness he must feel.

Once again, you answered the call and these amazing quilt blocks began coming in from New Mexico, Iowa, Washington and several from Australia and I knew then, Brendan <strike>had a quilt</strike>...let me rephrase that, Brendan would one day have a quilt.

Life happens in many different ways and my family is not immune to having issues, my husband and I downsized and moved, the quilt squares got put away in a safe place.

Once I found them, with the amazing quilting talent of Michelle M. in Oregon, I was able to send them to her and she said she would put them together and WOW!!

After the quilt was made, Michelle began to look for a border and back and it had to in some way represent what these men represented and loved and that was the outdoors.

Michelle picked the gold border and it reminds me of autumn and the dry straw that is growing in my area. Sadly, as I write this, we have dozens upon dozens of firefighters and hotshot teams in our area from two fires that started earlier this week and they are waiting for all the fires, embers to be out before they leave.

Then Michelle picked the beautiful pine green backing and worked her magic.

On June 6, 2016 just prior to the 3rd anniversary of Yarnell Hill, Michelle mailed the quilt back to me alone with postage, the quilt label and I was to finish the binding and did and then, I wrapped the two together and put it away in a safe place.

So safe, that I forgot where I put it but eventually located it in our storage safely tucked in with other quilts.

I brought it home and all I wanted to do was get the perfect picture with a nature background, perhaps snow covered trees, Mt. Rainer, a river, but alas, we had the rainiest season last year and I could not get the picture taken.

My husband and I purchased a Harley and on the maiden voyage, I took the quilt and found the place to take the picture, Mayfield Lake in Washington, I loved the fact that a gentle breeze blew up and ruffled the quilt. I felt the 19 were gently blowing it and saying, 'this is the place!'
The above pictures are of my son and his three amazing kids!

My son got out of prison just over two years ago and has done everything in his power to stay out, get off parole and raise his kids. He is a single dad.

In spite of his desire and willingness to work, he has been unable to find permanent employment or housing due to being a felon and due to having health issues.

When he was released, he had a huge tumor on his stomach and after months of pain, it was discovered he had a hiatel hernia and that put him out of work for over 6 weeks.

He was working at a local mill when one day a friend stopped by and asked if he wanted to go out riding around on his quads and on the way, the friends girlfriend rolled the vehicle with my son in it. The hospital said he was fine and released him.

A few weeks later while at work, his back began to hurt him and after testings and Xrays and CT scan, a fracture of his T10-T11 was discovered. Since this was not the result of an 'on the job,' injury he could not earn unemployment or workman's comp. The girl who was driving the car, had no insurance and left the area so he couldn't get accident insurance either.

For over a year, he wore a brace and used a special bone growth machine and finally when it was determined he could have physical therapy, he developed an inguinal hernia that was strangulated and had to have another surgery. This surgery kept him down for a long time and eventually he was able to begin physical therapy.

However, it was determined by the PT and his surgeon that he cannot return to being a laborer any longer, the constant lifting of heavy items would damage his back beyond repair.

The course of action was to have him apply for training through the local vocational rehabilitation department and put him through re-training so he could return to being a productive dad.

During this time, my son has not given up. Oh yes, he gets discouraged, but he keeps on going. Justin attends church, is a door greeter, is a youth mentor, has just been invited to be a pastor on the local jail team, is a co-leader of our men's group and when anyone asks him for help and he can, he does! Everyone loves him and he knows no strangers.

The more Justin and his children become involved with the Lord, the more angry his girlfriend became, she wasn't coming home from work until after midnight (she gets off at 5:30 in the afternoon). Justin revealed to his mentor that the more he becomes involved with church, the worse she became and yet, he kept trying to do what was right.

Two weeks ago, his girlfriend told him, you and your kids get out of my home, you are no longer wanted. Torn apart, Justin did what she asked and with the help of our church, placed all their belongings in storage and walked away and is now living in a group home situation where they are actually happier due to less stress.

The issue is, Justin needs a car. His kids need rides from school after band and sports and he needs to get to vocational rehab to find work.

I have set up a Go Fund Me account to raise $1500 and we have in the past week, raised over half of what we need to and thus far raised $805. We are looking for a decent reliable car for Justin and the ability to pay at least 3 to 6 months insurance for him.

Please, if you can help support this cause with a $5 or even $10 donation or more, I have posted the link at the bottom. If not, please pray we can meet our goal quickly.

It has been difficult for Justin. Justin wants to work, he enjoys work and living off assistance is not how he wants to live or raise his children. Without a vehicle he can't get a job or vocational rehab and without vocational rehab or a vehicle, he can't obtain a job.
you know, I am now living in a 5th wheel and do not have an inch of
space available to hold onto quilts and I can't afford to store them
because we already have a storage unit full to the gills that someday we
hope to place into another home or at least one of our children's
homes!

Hurricane Matthew is
on its way to Florida. It has already left death and destruction in its
path in Haiti and I am unsure about Cuba at this time.

Quilters,
if it hits Florida, I am going to be in need of quilts to send to the
areas hit to provide these families with fresh, clean and handmade
quilts and I will need all of you to let me know you can do this.

I have a
few family members and friends that are going to step up I am sure after
checking on their own homes and businesses and be willing to help get
these quilts passed out to those in need.

Quilts are
expensive to ship, I suggest you speak with your quilt guild, church,
friends and family and ask them if they would be willing to donate for
the postage costs. I have learned if you put quilts into a large
garbage bag, attach your vacuum and suck all the air out, you can save a
bit on postage and fit more into a box.

When
sending quilts, since I cannot go through them, please, please do NOT
send ratty, tatty, stinky, smelly, stained with urine, blood, food, etc.
gross and nasty quilts you wouldn't put in your own home.

Last
disaster I donated numerous quilts to local charities or the dump
because they were so disgusting! Think of how you would feel if you had
to leave your home and then came back and had nothing left.

Your
quilts are blessings!! The letters, cards, pictures I get back and post
come from real people who lost everything and then they received a
handmade quilt from a stranger and life became a bit brighter. Be that
LIGHT!!!

When
sending out a quilt or quilts, please think about enclosing a few other
things...gloves for warmth and gloves for cleaning, hats, socks, jerky,
granola bars, bandages, dried fruit, head lamps or flashlights,
batteries, coloring books and crayons, feminine needs supplies, hand
sanitizer, baby wipes, etc.

Please
pray for me. I am still praying for a miracle of the gift of a truck and
garage style 5th wheel that I can hook up and go and fill the back with
quilts, quilting supplies, sewing machines and head out to these
disasters and begin quilting and get quilters involved.

My current 5th wheel is my home, I cannot just unhook and go, so I really need prayers to be met!

Lets be ready quilters, you are the best! Quiltingrannyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08885973879588867172noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-796815095369839192.post-77650509934040236182016-08-28T07:56:00.002-07:002016-08-28T07:56:24.642-07:00Doing What is RightAll my life, I have done what is right.
From the time I was twelve, I began working babysitting, ironing, cleaning houses. When I was fifteen I got my first job making seventy-five cents an hour and I put some in savings and bought my own clothes. When I turned sixteen, I took another job and I was making $1.25 an hour.

I have always worked and as long as I can remember, I have always volunteered from being a Candy Striper at a local hospital, to a PTA president, parent/teacher class aide, working for an organization that helped women, volunteering at church and this quilting ministry that is my heart and soul!

My husband and I have spent thousands of dollars purchasing fabrics, thread, batting, sewing machines and supplies not to mention the money spent on shipping quilts out across the country and at times the world, gas spent delivering quilts, food while on our trips, the upkeep of our vehicles and NOT once has my husband honestly complained.

Over the years he has teased me about being careful what he opens because he knows fabric will fall out, not turning on the oven because fabric would catch on fire and the best is find a frozen fabricycle in the freezer.

My husband endured many years of coming home to a sewing machine on the dining table, pins in his feet and yes, his butt as he has sat on a few, but he has always bragged to others about this ministry and how proud he is of what I do.

In late January, our family was literally torn apart, destroyed by lies and hatefulness. During this time, my husband and I gave up our dream of owing the home we were leasing to own, he sold his boat, his workshop was left behind, all our furniture with the exception of our bedroom set and the children's bedroom furniture was sold and we were left with thirty-five years of memories either sold or packed away in a storage unit while our grandchildren moved in with their father and his girlfriend.

My van which I had just purchased the year before because the seats sat into the floor so no more moving seats to do quilt deliveries was traded in for a small SUV with lower miles and much less room. It still holds seven people but not very comfortably as the grands tell me when I pick them up for church.

My hubby and I are now living in a thirty-seven foot fifth wheel. We do our laundry once a week at a laundromat, I no longer can fruits or veggies from our garden because I no longer have one nor do I have the space to store anything. Which also means, I can no longer quilt, there is no space.

I miss quilting so much, I was thinking the other day of purchasing a Singer Featherweight and seeing if I could set it up on a tv tray to do quilting, but honestly, it just wouldn't work. I have even given a passing thought to locating an office space to rent, but that would be quite expensive. My dream of having my own studio, has dissipated into the wind.

Recently, there has been an upsurge of hits on Layers of Hope's Facebook page and I could not figure out why. My husband told me, the quilters who have supported and loved you for so long are looking to see if you are collecting quilts for the flood victims or the fire victims right now because that is what you have done for so many years.

I have thought fleetingly about collecting them, but I have no place any longer to keep them until delivery. I have thought of heading to Louisiana to make quilts, but I have no place to stay. In the past I have begged dealers with 5th wheel toy haulers to donate one so I could travel and set the back up for quilting.

As of yet, no one has stepped up and said, here is a truck and here is an RV and go out and bless the masses. I have however, been blessed in the past with sewing machine, fabric, batting, postage, stamps for thank you and Christmas cards and so many quilts to bless others with. You have all blessed me and warmed my heart.

My husband is an amazing man of love, character and honor. He works while he is sick, he works overtime, he takes care of me when I can barely move and he never complains. My husband is my rock.

All of you, the quilters, the sponsors, the recipients of quilts are all my hope in humanity when the days become so dark I can't see the stars, because I am literally drowning in fear. I can open this blog or Pinterest and see how each one of you contributed to making this ministry amazing.

I wish I could hug you all and thank you for all the amazing years you have surprised me with your generosity and kindness. I guess right now, all I can do is know that I was doing what was right and no matter what happens, I will always do my best to do what is right and to help others.

I am praying for a blessing, a miracle that soon, I will be quilting again and that my life will once again have balance. I know God is good, I know many people who suffer silently with anxiety and depression and I know, I am being stretched to trust in God and rest right now.

I truly thank all of you for always doing what is right and in the words of my beautiful, amazing, wonderful fourteen year old granddaughter Aly:
'Don't Let the Storms Stop You!'
